    The rotator cuff is a group of four muscles and their tendons that surround the shoulder joint, helping to lift and rotate the arm while keeping the ball of the upper arm bone stable in the socket. A rotator cuff tear occurs when one or more of these tendons is partially or completely torn. Tears can develop suddenly from injury or gradually over time due to wear and age-related changes.
