The posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) prevents the shin bone (tibia) from sliding backward relative to the thigh bone (femur). The PCL is stronger and thicker than the ACL and less commonly injured. PCL tears are graded from I (mild) to III (complete). Unlike ACL tears, isolated PCL tears often have good healing potential and may not require surgery.
