    Symptoms include:

    Sudden pain at the front of the knee

    Visible kneecap displacement (may spontaneously reduce)

    Feeling of the kneecap “giving way” or shifting

    Swelling after episodes

    Apprehension or fear with certain movements (particularly twisting)

    Difficulty with activities requiring cutting or pivoting

    First-time dislocations are often traumatic and frightening; recurrent instability may occur with minimal provocation.
