Patellar instability can result from anatomical factors (shallow groove, high-riding patella, ligament laxity, knock-knee alignment), acute trauma (direct blow or twisting injury), muscle weakness (particularly VMO), or previous dislocation that damaged stabilising structures. Risk factors include female gender, adolescence, family history, and participation in pivoting sports.
