Patellofemoral instability occurs when the kneecap (patella) moves abnormally or slips out of its groove on the thigh bone (femur). This can range from a feeling of the kneecap “giving way” or shifting (subluxation) to complete dislocation where the kneecap moves entirely out of position. First-time dislocations often occur during sports or activities involving twisting. Recurrent instability may develop after the initial event.
