    Knee cartilage (articular or chondral) injuries involve damage to the smooth, slippery surface that covers the ends of bones in the knee joint. Unlike meniscus tears (which affect the shock-absorbing cartilage), chondral injuries affect the gliding surface itself. These injuries can range from superficial softening to full-thickness defects exposing bone. Chondral injuries have limited healing potential because cartilage has no blood supply.
