    The meniscus is a C-shaped piece of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia). Each knee has two menisci (medial and lateral). Meniscus tears can be traumatic (from sports or sudden twisting) or degenerative (age-related wear). The tear pattern, location, and whether it’s in the outer “red zone” (better blood supply) or inner “white zone” (poor blood supply) affects treatment options.
