ACL tears typically occur during sports that involve sudden stops, jumping, pivoting, or direct contact (football, basketball, skiing, soccer, netball). Non-contact injuries are most common, often when landing from a jump or suddenly changing direction. Risk factors include female gender (due to anatomical and hormonal factors), certain movement patterns, previous ACL injury, and participation in high-risk sports.
