Knee arthritis can develop from age-related degeneration (primary osteoarthritis), previous knee injuries (ACL tear, meniscus tear, fractures), malalignment (bow-legs or knock-knees), obesity (increased joint loading), inflammatory arthritis, or family history. Risk factors include advancing age, obesity, previous joint injuries, repetitive stress, and genetics.
