Knee arthritis (osteoarthritis) occurs when the protective cartilage covering the ends of bones gradually wears away, leading to bone-on-bone contact, pain, and stiffness. Arthritis may also follow inflammatory conditions (rheumatoid arthritis) or previous injuries (post-traumatic arthritis).
