Gallbladder polyps are often an incidental finding - found on ultrasound when performed for other reasons. They tend to not cause pain and are found in 4.3 to 9.5% of the general population in australia. They can rarely become cancerous and it is for this reason that guidelines exist for their management. In simple terms, the size of the polyp and risk factors for malignancy guide treatment Surgical removal of gallbladder for polyp size 1 cm or more Polyp size 6 to 9 mm - serial U/S 6 month, 1 year and then 2 years - remove gallbladder if size increase during these times Polyp size less than 6 mm - no follow-up needed but I would recommend an ultrasound in 1 year to assess for size increase
