Osteoporosis is a condition where bones become weak and fragile, increasing the risk of fractures, particularly in the spine, hip, and wrist. It often develops silently over many years and may only be diagnosed after a fracture occurs. Risk factors include age, family history, low body weight, smoking, certain medications, and hormonal changes—particularly in women after menopause. A bone density scan (DEXA) is used to assess bone health. With early diagnosis, lifestyle changes and medication can help reduce the risk of fractures and preserve bone strength.
