Diabetes is a chronic condition that affects how the body processes blood glucose (sugar). It occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (as in type 1 diabetes), or when the body becomes resistant to insulin (as in type 2 diabetes). Over time, poorly controlled diabetes can lead to complications affecting the heart, kidneys, eyes, nerves, and circulation.
