    CKD has five stages, based on how well your kidneys filter waste (measured by your eGFR). The staging system was mostly used for research but helps with predicting complications of kidney disease. eGFR stands for "estimated glomerular filtration rate." It’s a simple number from a blood test that tells us how well your kidneys are cleaning your blood. Your kidneys act like filters, removing waste and extra fluid from your body. Knowing the stage of your kidney disease helps us predict complications and tailor your care.
