    If left untreated:

    • Small asymptomatic hernias might remain stable for some time but could grow larger over time due to increased abdominal pressure from activities like heavy lifting or chronic coughing.

    • Larger untreated hernias pose risks such as incarceration (tissue getting stuck) or strangulation (cutting off blood supply), which can lead to severe pain, bowel obstruction, necrosis (tissue death), and life-threatening infections like peritonitis if not treated promptly via emergency surgery.
