Colorectal Surgeon (Bowel), General Surgeon, Laparoscopic Surgeon
• Observation: Small benign-looking polyps (<1 cm) without symptoms are usually monitored with periodic ultrasounds.
• Surgery: Larger (>1 cm), symptomatic, or suspicious-looking polyps often require surgical removal of the entire gallbladder (cholecystectomy) since individual polyp removal isn’t possible without removing the organ itself.
• Surgery is also recommended if there’s a high risk for cancer based on factors like age (>50 years), diabetes, family history of cancer syndromes, or coexisting conditions like primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC).
