Faecal calprotectin is a stool sample that acts a screening test for inflammation in the bowel. If your stool result elevated (>50 ug/g), this suggests there may be inflammation in the bowel. Inflammation can be caused by infections, diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis, or even a bowel cancer. I would usually exclude an infection first by asking you for a stool sample that tests specifically for infection and if negative, then perform a colonoscopy to assess for other causes.
