Blood in the stool is not normal, and always a symptom that should be investigated. Haemorrhoids, especially internal haemorrhoids, are one of the most common causes, but other conditions should be excluded, such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), diverticulitis, polyps and bowel cancer. All of these conditions can be diagnosed with a colonoscopy.
