Bowel cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related death in Australia. 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated if they are detected early. The National Bowel Cancer Screening Program sends free home bowel testing kits to Australians aged 50-74 every 2 years, and since July 2024, younger people aged 45-49, can also request to receive a free bowel testing kit. The kit tests for blood in the stool (which can be a sign of bowel cancer), and requires you to collect two small stool samples and then mail them back to the laboratory for testing. Your results are usually available after 2 weeks.
