    In most cases, PAD is caused by atherosclerosis, a buildup of plaque (fats and cholesterol) on the walls of the arteries leading to the legs and feet. This gradual accumulation narrows the arteries over time.

    Risk factors for atherosclerosis include:

    • Cigarette smoking - damages the arteries

    • Poorly controlled diabetes - elevated blood sugar weakens and damages blood vessels, causing them to narrow.

    • High cholesterol

    • High blood pressure
