The majority of cases (95%) have no specific contributing factors or causes identified (idiopathic).
A few factors may put people at greater risk such as diabetes, trauma, inflammatory conditions, or pregnancy. These conditions all increase swelling and therefore decrease space in the carpal tunnel.
Repetitive extreme wrist flexion and extension during sport or work can contribute to symptoms.
