When you injure your ACL, you might hear a "popping" sound and you may feel as though the knee has given out. Within the first two hours after injury, your knee will swell and you may have a buckling sensation in the knee during twisting movements.

Common symptoms at the time of injury include:
A loud “pop” or popping sensation in the knee
Sudden severe pain and inability to continue activity
Rapid swelling within hours
Loss of range of motion
Feeling of instability or the knee “giving way”
After the initial injury, instability with pivoting or cutting movements is a hallmark sign.
