Like all joints the ankle can be affected by arthritis. Arthritis of the ankle is usually the result of previous injury, instability or fracture of the ankle and tends to affect younger patients more than hip and knee arthritis. Overtime, arthritis leads to increasing pain, swelling and stiffness resulting in an ankle that does not function well. Ankle replacement surgery is an effective way to decrease the pain of severe ankle arthritis, while maintaining range of motion. It is an alternative to ankle fusion surgery.
