• Sudden sharp pain in the back of the ankle and lower leg which often subsides into a dull ache
• A popping or snapping sound when the injury occurs
• Swelling near the heel
• Difficulty bending the foot downwards or ‘pushing off’ the injured leg when walking (especially upstairs or uphill)
• Difficulty standing on the toes on the injured leg
