Orthopaedic Surgeon
Rehabilitation for a reconstructed ACL will be conducted under the direction of an orthopaedic surgeon and the supervision of a physiotherapist. Rehabilitation aims to reduce knee swelling, maintain mobility of the kneecap, regain full range of motion of the knee and strengthen the quadriceps and hamstring muscles.
It is advised that athletes with reconstructed ACL injuries return to sport after they have been approved by their orthopaedic surgeon. This is usually when strength, range of motion and co-ordination are nearly at full capacity.4 Athletes often return to their sports after 9-12 months
