ACL reconstructive surgery (or repair of the anterior cruciate ligament) is a very common method used by an orthopaedic surgeon to repair a completely torn ACL.

The specifics of what needs to be done will depend on your individual case but in most patients, the ACL is reconstructed i.e. a new ligament is built. The surgical reconstruction of the ACL is generally done using a graft obtained from another ligament or tendon in your body (usually a tendon from the kneecap or hamstring). Tendon is a good substitute for a ligament as the type of tissue is very similar. If a graft cannot be obtained from the injured patient themselves then a graft from a donor is required. Operation usually takes 1-1.5 hours.
