Joint surgery is usually an option if the pain from arthritis causes disability and non -operative treatments such as weight loss, exercise and medicines have failed to control your symptoms. There are several surgical options available:
Osteotomy - the shinbone or the thighbone is cut and then reshaped to improve the alignment of the knee joint and shift the weight off the damaged side of the joint. This can help relieve the pressure on the knee joint.
Total or partial knee replacement (arthroplasty) - all or a part of the damaged cartilage and bone will be removed and then replaced with an artificial joint using metal and plastic parts.1 Total joint replacement is the most common surgery for osteoarthritis and aims to restore the function of your knee
