Your doctor will diagnose osteoarthritis from your symptoms and a physical examination. X-rays in a standing or half squatting position are very helpful in making the diagnosis of osteoarthritis. An X-ray may display the narrowing and changes in the shape of your joint.3 However, an X-ray showing joint damage does not always mean you will have severe pain or problems.3 Also, your joint may be very painful despite X-rays being normal. Blood tests can help to rule out other types of arthritis.3 MRIs are usually not the first investigation performed.
