Stones cause pain when they block the outflow of urine from the kidney. This pain will come and go, in waves, until the stone has passed out of the ureter. Smaller stones are more likely to pass out of body without needing surgery. A 3mm stone, for example, has an 83% chance of passing by itself within 12 days.
