A thyroidectomy is an operation to remove all or part of your thyroid gland. If the entire thyroid gland is removed it is called a total thyroidectomy. Whereas the removal of half of the thyroid gland is called a partial thyroidectomy or hemithyroidectomy. The type of thyroidectomy needed depends on the reason for the surgery.
The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland located at the base of the neck. It consists of two halves (lobes) and a middle part (thyroid isthmus) that joins the two lobes. It takes iodine from our diet and uses it to produce thyroid hormone, which controls how all our cells use energy for metabolism.
