These are techniques surgeons may use to maintain or improve the breast shape and symmetry during your operation. Plastic surgery techniques are used to achieve this and may involve volume displacement (shuffling the existing breast tissue around to fill the gaps left from excision) or volume replacement (using fat and/or skin from elsewhere in the body to fill in these gaps). It’s important to remember that not all patients require oncoplastic techniques to be used as part of their surgery and that if these techniques are recommended, there is no compromise to cancer outcomes or treatment.
