Being diagnosed, or potentially diagnosed with a breast cancer can be a stressful and daunting time. It is often not obvious what type of surgeon you need and what their qualifications and expertise should be. When obtaining a referral for a surgeon from your GP, it may be worth asking the following:

    • Is the surgeon a full member of BreastSurg ANZ (the governing body for breast surgeons in Australia and New Zealand)?

    • Does the surgeon work in a multidisciplinary team with access to additional cancer care services? • Do they work with a dedicated breast care nurse?

    • Do they have training and experience in oncoplastic breast surgery techniques to maintain symmetry and shape?

    • Are they affordable? Higher fees does not mean higher quality.
