Frozen shoulder usually develops slowly and through 3 stages.

    1. Freezing stage. Shoulder is very painful at rest and with use. It gradually gets stiffer during this phase and loses range of motion. This stage usually lasts about 4-9 months.

    2. Frozen stage. Shoulder is painful with movement but there is no pain when at rest. The shoulder remains stiff. This stage can last 4-12 months.

    3. Thawing stage. Shoulder motion and stiffness slowly improves. This stage can last 5-26 months.
