Macular disease, most commonly caused by age-related macular degeneration (MD), is a group of degenerative diseases of the retina that cause progressive, painless loss of central vision, affecting the ability to see fine detail, drive, read and recognise faces. Macular disease is one of the leading causes of vision loss in Australia, and typically affects one in seven people over the age of 50. Although there is no cure for MD, there are several treatment options to help slow the progression, depending on the stage and type of the disease (wet vs dry).
