Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners
Can a herniated disc cause piriformis syndrome?
I herniated a lumbar disc 4 months ago. My symptoms have definitely changed over the past 4 months. So far, my sciatica seems to have largely gone away for the most part. But what's been bothering me is what I Googled and learned is called piriformis syndrome. I can't find anything further on how herniated discs can cause piriformis syndrome. Nothing helps ease the back and leg pain it causes and stretching makes it worse.
I got a nerve block for my sciatica; which did absolutely nothing because it shows I didn't have inflammation from the herniated disc it was my piriformis the entire time. It's worse now because it's affecting my lower back. I just want to know if piriformis syndrome can be caused by a herniated disc since they both involve the sciatic nerve and they both happened at the same time.
