The parathyroid glands are 4 small glands buried in the larger thyroid gland. They are responsible for calcium balance in the body. Sometimes one or multiple parathyroid glands can have a growth which over-produces parathyroid hormone or PTH. While a high calcium level is usually asymptomatic, it is associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and kidney stones. A special nuclear medicine scan is needed for diagnosis. Treatment is usually surgery but the type of surgery depends on what the scan shows. With surgery, it is usually curable.
