  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Can DHEA assist with achieving a natural conception in over 45s?

I am 46 and after being told at 42 that I would never achieve a pregnancy using my own eggs I achieved a natural conception at 45 and 3 months and at 46 and 3 months, unfortunately both pregnancies miscarried at 8 and 5 weeks respectively. I have recently read of DHEA being used in conjunction with mild ovulation stimulation in older patients (45 plus) in the US, Europe and Israel to successfully improve both egg quality and quantity. The only option I have been offered when discussing fertility with doctors here in Sydney to date is to use donor eggs. Is DHEA currently being offered as a treatment option by any fertility specialists in Sydney or Australia?

The short answer is that DHEA is an experimental treatment which may improve egg quality in the setting of IVF. There is absolutely no evidence that DHEA would be of benefit while trying for natural conception. In general there are no fertility clinics in Australia which would offer IVF treatment to women over 46 years old. I hope this answers your question.
