Rapidly deteriorating vision in last year. What could this be?

I am 51yrs old. In the last 2 years my vision has deteriorated remarkably fast (especially this year). I have been wearing reading glasses for the last 6 years. Does alcohol consumption or taking any medications have an effect on your vision?

“Alcohol consumption does not directly have an effect on vision however secondary effects of excess alcohol consumption may do. For example, in individuals who have a poor diet as a result of their alcohol intake, an optic neuropathy may develop which will cause a reduction in vision that is often permanent.

Many medications may influence the vision with either temporary or permanent effects. The number of medications is too extensive to list here, but patient information sheets that come with each medication will always indicate whether visual side-effects are possible. Please also consult your general practitioner, optometrist or ophthalmologist for further information if you are unsure.”
