Australian Aborigines have been Hunter Gatherers for several thousands of years. In this time they have developed what is called the Thrifty Genome which enables them to get by on very little food. They are now introduced into a society where food is plentiful. Moreover the food that is most readily available and cheap is fast food which is high energy food and therefore they put on fat easily.
Being introduced into a society which is foreign to what they have been used to is stressful and stress causes Central Obesity which in turn is one of the main causes of type 2 diabetes.
