In medical terms “abortion” means the premature exit of the products of conception (the fetus, fetal membranes, and placenta) from the uterus. It is the loss of a pregnancy and does not refer to why that pregnancy was lost.

Doctors refer to abortion as a medical term meaning that pregnancy was lost. Doctors usually call it spontaneous abortion meaning that is was a spontaneous loss of fetus before 20 weeks, not surgical one.
