After years of being frustrated by the use of excessive medications and operations in the hospital system, Dr. Liam West embarked upon a full-time career in Sport & Exercise Medicine. He has a passion for using targeted exercises and active rehabilitation methods to return patients of all ages and abilities/disabilities to their physical activity or sporting goals after musculoskeletal injury.
After completing a Sports Science degree with first-class honors, Dr. Liam West graduated in Medicine from Cardiff University (Wales, UK) in 2013. He then worked in Oxford for two years as a junior doctor and during this period completed a Diploma in Sports & Exercise Medicine. He developed his passion for Sports Medicine working in various environments including as Team Doctor for the U16 England Football (Soccer) team, at the Cerebral Palsy Soccer World Cup and for Birmingham City Ladies FC in the Premier League. In 2015 Liam moved to Melbourne in order to pursue specialist training in Sport & Exercise Medicine. He now works for Hawthorn FC, VIC Country AFL Academy, Melbourne Victory. Furthermore, in 2018 he worked at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
In addition to these extensive clinical experiences, Dr. Liam West has led UK & European-wide Sports Medicine committees, is a Senior Associate Editor for British Journal of Sports Medicine (BJSM) and in 2017 was elected the President of the Victorian Council of Sports Medicine Australia (SMA). He has multiple publications in respected medical journals, has presented at several international conferences and produces regular BJSM podcasts & blogs with experts from around the world in Sport & Exercise Medicine.
Dr. Liam West continues to practice what he preaches, after a (relatively) successful semi-professional soccer career in the UK he has now taken up Aussie Rules, playing for the University Blues in the VAFA as an erratic small forward. Otherwise, at the weekend he can be found jogging around the Botanical Gardens before grabbing a coffee with friends.
