I have been involved in therapy and counselling for the last 17 years. I have significant experience in working with refugee population and their traumatic experiences and the issues around acculturation. I have also worked with clients with intellectual disabilities and autism providing counselling and behaviour support for the clients and their families. I work with adults, children and families. I am an accredited supervisor by AHPRA and I also supervise psychology students in their internship program.
My work has been centred on evidence based therapies, including, Cognitive, Behavior and Solution Focused approaches. However, I have found mindfulness-based behavior approaches much more effective and relevant to my clients’ needs. As a result, a major focus of my approach is now on Values, Acceptance, Forgiveness, Compassion, living in the present moment, and accessing a transcendent sense of self through values-guided behavioral interventions. I provide therapy for clinical conditions such as depression, anxiety, autism and behaviour management, obsessive compulsive disorders, post traumatic stress disorders, workplace related stress, chronic pain, and adjustment disorders. My aim is to support clients to create a rich, spiritual and meaningful life, while accepting the pain that inevitably goes with it.
I believe that life’s challenges are meaningful tests and thus are the means through which we can grow and develop greater capacities, and to acquire spiritual qualities and ultimately achieve greater happiness. I work under the assumption that every individual has the ‘potential’ for growth; therefore, my client/therapist relation is based on:
~ providing an environment in which the client feels comfortable to engage in for his/her own personal growth;
~ stimulating ‘self-awareness’ in clients at cognitive, emotional and spiritual levels and inspiring them to embrace their ‘values’ and their ‘spiritual self’.
I endorse a holistic approach to therapy and consider the individual as a whole entity, one that encompasses many powers including biological (organic and genetic), physical (bodily and sensations), psychological (thoughts, feelings and memory), transcendental (contemplation and meditation) and spiritual. When all the powers work in harmony the body is in a state of equilibrium. Deficiency, in one aspect triggers disparity and disturbs other aspects. Therefore, the aim of the therapy is to identify the discrepancy, to empower the individual to make necessary changes, learn skills to manage the emotions, and live a meaningful life despite the painful life experiences.
