Dr Illes trained at the University of Cape Town in General Medicine, receiving an MB BCh, and subsequently attained his FCP (SA). He completed his cardiology training as Senior Registrar to Professor Ronald Campbell (President-Elect of the British Cardiac Society) at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne where he qualified in interventional cardiology with extensive electrophysiology study experience. Dr Illes emigrated to Australia in 1997 and attained his FRACP in 1998. He also holds a DCH (SA). His current appointments are at Sydney Adventist Hospital as an interventional cardiologist and as Director of the Coronary Care Unit. He is also a senior clinical lecturer at Macquarie University.
Dr Illes has a special interest in interventional cardiology, device implantation of pacemakers and defibrillators, and cardiac resynchronisation therapy, for which he conducted the first implant in Australia. He is also interested in heart failure management. He now administers one of the largest home monitoring sites for pacemakers and defibrillators – monitoring over 200 patients remotely. This site is run with the cooperation of other cardiologists whose patients are monitored. Dr Illes is the principle investigator in numerous pacemaker and defibrillator outcome trials, including for PASSES (Medtronic), FREEDOM (St Judes), COGNITION (Biotronik), IN-TIME (Biotronik, IMPACT (Biotronik).
