Trusses are devices which are designed like a belt to put pressure on the area of weakness where the hernia is and keep the bulge of the hernia (often inguinal) inside. While it may decrease the symptoms and can, at times, make your father comfortable, it may not hold the hernia back in (especially if it moves from its position).
Occasionally, it may even make the symptoms worse due to pressure if it traps the bulge outside of the body rather than keeping it in place.
As a general rule, use of trusses is temporary and reserved for situations where the risks of hernia surgery outweigh the benefits. Please discuss this further with your GP or a surgeon for more details regarding your father’s specific circumstances.
