  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Could my son have an organic psychiatric disorder?

I have an 18 year old son who has been on a downward trajectory in last 3 -4 years. He appears to swing from rages to periods where he isolates himself in his room playing computer games for many hours. He is performing poorly in university, and in his relationships with his parents. The only form of communication with his parents are raging battles. He sees a psychologist who says that we the parents are the main problem. I do not believe he is improving and fear that there is something more than psychosocial going on. I am the mother and I was diagnosed a few years ago as having bipolar 2 after a lifetime of hypomanic episodes interspersed with bouts of depression every 2-3 years. I have been medication since 2011 and it has changed my life.
I need some advice on how I find a psychiatrist that will truly try to get to the bottom of my son's troubled mind.
