  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Coeliac on gluten free diet for 11 years, now eating gluten - what now?

Last 5 months I have eaten a full normal gluten-containing diet with no discernible health effects. 11 years ago when I was 45 years old I was diagnosed with coeliac disease by antibodies and a small bowel biopsy. I had mild symptoms - loose floating bowel motions and heartburn. Symptoms subsided on a gluten-free diet. Second biopsy and antibodies showed recovery. On infrequent occasions when ate gluten in subsequent years I noted mild GI symptoms but associated with over-indulgence. The last 5 months I've been enjoying a full diet including copious gluten without any symptoms, however, my antibodies have increased again. I want to get the best up to date advice. Hoping for a doctor who is an expert in coeliac disease to help me manage it. I would love some expert advice or recommendation on an expert to see. I live in Murwillumbah, Northern NSW but happy to drive to Brisbane / Gold Coast.
