  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

I think I might have ADD

I've always had issues focusing, even since primary school I would always take far longer to complete tasks and get easily distracted, despite doing far better than my peers once I was done. Recently I submitted my 5th university assignment in a row about two weeks late and I was ranting to my mum when she mentioned to me that she's had the same issue when it comes to difficulty focusing since she was a child. I will literally sit at the library at uni from 9am to 8pm and read about 10 pages on the worst days. I have experimented with self-medication in the past (which I understand is not a good idea), and I found that Ritalin and Adderall both helped quite a lot but I much preferred the long release Adderall as I found the "rush and crash" even on 10mg of Ritalin once a day undesirable. I am already aware that I definitely dont want immediate release Ritalin, and found Adderall to be more helpful. If I told my psychiatrist all this, would it put them off prescribing me ADD medication?
