  • Q&A with Australian Health Practitioners

Can BiPolar genes in Mum, cause ADHD (or similar) in my 7yo son?

I was diagnosed BiPolar Disorder in 2003 (only one manic episode causing hospitalisation in 2007 - well managed since then). Pregnant in 2010 (maintained Li throughout). Son (born to term) in 2010. Very active, extremely bright, reading full books to his kindergarten class at 3.5yo. Unfortunately once in Primary School, his over-activity, difficulty sitting still in class, & easy distractions => Paediatric diagnoses of ADHD 2017. I am worried that my BiPolar genes (& my newly diagnosed Panic Disorder/Anxiety) have been passed to my son; somehow causing his ADHD - and poss future mental health issues. Could you pls advise - and further, how to manage us both...?
