My 78yo Mother has 3 month history 8kg weight loss, rib and shoulder pain and her recent chest x-ray showed lesions suggestive of multiple myeloma/metastases and suggested further investigations. Her GP has got her in to see hematologist at local public hospital (she has no health insurance) but there is a 2 month wait. Meanwhile she is becoming very frail from the continuing weight loss and is in pain. Prior to this event, she was fit and well with no significant past medical history. Is this waiting time appropriate? If she sees a hematologist privately, do we have to make sure he/she sees admits in public hospitals.
