Can a freckle in the eye be dangerous?

Is a freckle in the whites of the eye dangerous? like a melanoma? Especially in tropical regions where skin cancer is quite common and the eye is rarely ever protected by sunglasses? What are the chances of it being dangerous for young adults with dark brown eyes? Should I get it checked? Is a check up like this covered in a regular eye test? The freckle is in the shape of a slightly slanted oval that is an even light brown colour. It's appeared in the last few years but I haven't experienced seeing strange light or floaties or vision loss.
